I’m a compulsive knitter, so my needles and yarn travel wherever I go—meetings, doctor’s offices, basketball games, airports, and train stations. I knit in public all the time. Sometimes my knitting is met with furtive glances from curious but shy onlookers who wonder what I’m doing but don’t want to stare. Sometimes a fellow knitter will nod and smile knowingly. And my favorites are the little ones who bound right up to me, point at my five bamboo dpns, and ask, “What are you doing?” And the best, is when they want to give it a try!
Worldwide Knit in Public Day
On Worldwide Knit in Public Day—every year on the second Saturday in June—there will be throngs of us out knitting together in this global celebration. We’ll gather in parks, cafés, libraries, and fiber festivals, sharing the joy of making something by hand. At its heart, this day is a reminder that knitting isn’t just a solitary craft—it’s a vibrant, social, creative tradition that thrives when people come together, swap stories, and show off their work. The day invites everyone, from seasoned knitters to curious beginners, to pick up their needles and connect with a community as warm and colorful as the projects they’re stitching.

Knitting in public has a long history, and we’ve explored that theme many times in past issues of PieceWork. From American Revolution–era “spinning meetings,” where women competed to spin, weave, and knit as many homespun goods as possible to replace boycotted British imports, to the knitters around the world who gathered to make garments for soldiers and neighbors during the Civil War and both World Wars, public crafting has always been a force for community. We still gather today—knitting for charities, knitting for connection, knitting with our families and friends.
How Will You Celebrate?

So how will you spend the day? Are you joining up with friends at your favorite yarn shop? Meeting up with your local "Knitting with Nerds" group at the coffee shop down the street? Maybe your fiber guild has something special planned for the day? Whatever it is, we'd love to hear from you—and to see your photos! Write to us at [email protected] to let us know what you knitted and how you celebrated.
For Worldwide Knit in Public Day, we've made some new knitting patterns available in the PieceWork Library. Some patterns, like The Bristol Pool Double-Braided Cable Muffler, are available as FREE downloads.
Happy Knitting,
Karen
