Enjoy a free tatted edging pattern from PieceWork’s Trimmings. This column offers a collection of patterns, charts, and instructions that have been gleaned from old magazines and books that are no longer generally available. Most of the patterns and instructions for these small needlework articles are worded exactly as they appeared in the original publication.
The techniques vary and include knitting, crochet, tatting, and more. Use them as they are or adapt them to other techniques—but do have fun with them! Here’s a tatted edging originally published in Needlecraft Magazine’s October 1928 issue, and it was featured in the Trimmings department of the September/October 1995 issue of PieceWork.

No. 1—A ring of (3 double knots, picot) 3 times, 3 double knots; close; (chain of 3 double knots, picot, 3 double knots; a ring, as before, joining by 1st picot to last picot of preceding ring) twice; a ring, joining as directed; * turn, a chain of 5 double knots, picot, 5 double knots; a ring of 5 double knots, picot, 5 double knots, close; a chain of (3 double knots, picot) twice, 3 double knots; a ring of 5 double knots, join to small picot, 5 double knots, close; a chain of 5 double knots, picot, 5 double knots, join to base of 1st ring made; turn, a chain of 5 double knots, picot, 3 double knots, join to picot of last chain made; chain of 3 double knots, (picot, 3 double knots ) 3 times, join to picot of next chain, chain of 3 double knots, picot, 3 double knots, join to next picot of same chain, chain of 3 double knots, ( picot, 3 double knots) 3 times, join to picot of next chain, chain of 3 double knots, picot, 5 double knots, * join to base of 3d ring (of heading chain [)], chain of 4 double knots; a ring like 1st ring of heading, joining to preceding ring by side picot; chain of 4 double knots; a ring of 4 double knots, join to the picot of last chain of scallop (4 double knots, picot) twice, 4 double knots, close; chain of 4 double knots; a ring, like 1st, joining to preceding by side picot; chain of 4 double knots. Repeat, joining 1st ring to preceding, and the picot of 1st outer chain of 2d scallop to last picot of the single ring between scallops.
