Inspired by the words from Northanger Abbey these stockings, which are just almost pretty and would become Catherine Morland very well. Knit the basic ribbing pattern that is interrupted with a chevron lace panel that runs to the outer ankle, where it is met by another chevron lace panel that crosses to the inside of the foot. Finished Size: About 61/2 (7, 71/2)" foot circumference and 83/4 (9, 91/4)" from back of heel to tip of toe; foot length is adjustable. Socks shown measure 7".

Yarn: Lorna's Laces Shepherd Sock (80% wool, 20% nylon; 435 yd [398 m]/31/2 oz [100 g]): powder blue, 1 skein.

Needles: Size 1 (2.25 mm): set of 5 double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); tapestry needle.

Gauge: 38 sts and 56 rnds = 4" in St st.
