Leading Stoker Edward McKenzie's Mittens Knitting Pattern Download

These over-mittens take their inspiration from a pair that belonged to Leading Stoker Edward McKenzie (1888-1973), a member of the crew on the British Antarctic Terra Nova Expedition, 1910 to 1913, led by Captain Robert Falcon Scott. Edward McKenzie's machine-knitted mitts were industrially produced by a well-known British firm, Wolsey, still in production today. They would have been part of his Navy clothing issue. The mitts in this pattern, although hand knitted, have the same construction, knitted from the top down.

Finished Size: 8½ inches (21.6 cm) hand circumference (unstretched) and 12¼ inches (31.1 cm) long

Yarn: Blacker Yarns Pure North Ronaldsay, 100% wool yarn, Aran weight, 76 yards (69.5 m)/50 gram (1.8 oz) ball, 3 balls of Dark Grey;

Needles: set of double pointed, 2 circulars, or 1 long circular, as preferred, size 8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Markers; Waste yarn in the same weight but contrasting colors for CO and for holding stitches; Tapestry needle

Gauge: 24 sts and 22 rnds = 4 inches (10.2 cm) in k1, p1 rib
