Scandinavian Sweater for a Child

The classic look in this child’s-size pullover is perfectly vintage. The sweater features a tapestry crochet colorwork pattern at the hem and sleeves in back-loop-only single crochet. The pattern is derived from a traditional Scandinavian design, simplified for use on a child’s garment. Traditionally worked in red and white, a brown-and-white combination is a modern take on this traditional technique. Tapestry crochet can look messy, especially when using such contrasting colors. Here, however, there’s a little trick to getting the colorwork to be a bit sharper. While it takes a little more time, the beautiful effect is worth it.

Materials Needed

• Lion Brand Yarns Fisherman’s Wool, 100% wool yarn, 465 yards (425.2 m)/227 gram (8.0 oz) skein, 1 (2, 2) skeins of #126 Nature’s Brown (A) and 1 skein of #098 Natural (B);

• Crochet hook, size H/8 (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

• Tapestry needle

Finished sizes: Chest circumference 20½ (24½, 28¾) inches (52.1 [62.2, 73.0] cm); to fit child sizes 2T (4T, 6T); 13½ (15½, 17½) inches (34.3 [39.4, 44.5] cm) long

Gauge: 19½ sts and 18 rows = 4 inches (10.2 cm) in sc blo worked in the rnd
