Inspired by the lovely square shawl worn by actress Toni Collette in the role of Harriet Smith (Emma, Miramax 1996), our version features a lacy, latticework garter pattern for the center square and a stockinette-stitch diamond inner border with classic garter point edging.

Materials

  • Yarn: Lopi Einband Icelandic Laceweight (100 % wool; 273 yd [250 m]/ 1¾ oz [50 g]): #1038 bain (light tan heather), 5 balls. Yarn distributed by Schoolhouse Press.

  • Needles: Size 3 (3.5mm): 40" or longer circular (cir), and a single straight or double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

  • Notions: Tapestry needle; markers (m: 1 in a unique color for alpha marker, 3 in a second color for corners, and more as desired); point protector to fit circular needle.

Finished Size: 44" square, measured from point to point, relaxed after blocking.

Gauge: 19 sts and 40 rows = 4" in patt from Garter Lattice chart; 19½ sts and 38 rnds = 4" in patt from Diamond Border chart; both gauges relaxed after blocking.
