Emma's Overdress Knitting Pattern

The overdress was the perfect cover-up to change the look of a simple day dress and to protect clothing from wear. Inspired by an overdress worn in the 1996 film adaptation of Emma, this design has been shortened into a tunic-length garment for modern women. Wear it over a shirt or sundress for added warmth and style. The cabled band is knitted first, and stitches are picked up for both the bodice and skirt. A dainty lace edging keeps the appearance feminine, and a pretty button closure adorns the front.

Finished Size: 28 (32, 36, 39¾, 43¾, 47¾, 51¾)" bust circumference, buttoned. Vest shown measures 32".

Yarn: Swans Island Natural Colors Collection (100% organic Merino; 525 yd [480 m]/3½ oz [100 g]): #YF120 winterberry, 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3) skeins.

Needles: Cabled band—size 2 (2.75 mm); Body—size 4 (3.5 mm): 32" circular (cir). Adjust needle sizes if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Cable needle (cn); markers (m); stitch holders; tapestry needle; one 7⁄8" button.

Gauge: 28 sts and 38 rows = 4" in St st on larger needles.
