A lifelong love of roses drew Lianne to an antique sampler by an unknown maker. The sampler became part of her antique sampler collection and the inspiration for this pattern.

Materials

  • Weeks Dye Works linen, 35-count, Tin Roof, suggested 16 1/2" × 14 1/2" (41.9 × 36.8 cm)
  • Weeks Dye Works over-dyed embroidery floss, 6 stranded, 100% cotton, 5 yard (4.6 m)/skein, 1 skein each of #1330 Baked Apple, #2202 Bullfrog, #2120 Capri, #1107 Cattail, #1171 Dove, #2102 Fathom, #2264 Garnet, #1118 Goldenrod, #2244 Grenadine, #2200 Kudzu, #2266a Louisiana Hot Sauce, #2225a Marmalade, #3910 Mascara, #1313 Purple Haze, #1326 Rust, #2249 Sockeye; 2 skeins each of #3940 Okefenokee and #1124 Sandcastle
  • Needles, petite tapestry, size 26 or 28
  • Embroidery scissors

About: Lianne van Leyen is a historical domestic interpreter and historic cook at Upper Canada Village, located east of Morrisburg, Ontario. Her career has spanned fine arts, child protection, banking, and higher-education management. Caretaker of antique schoolgirl samplers and needlework, she is also the owner and designer behind 1897 Schoolhouse Samplers.
