The Fortieth Serie includes 15 useful items to knit for ladies, gentlemen, and children, all from Weldon's Practical Needlework.

We have reproduced for you here the knitting material from the Fortieth Series (neither alterations nor corrections were made to the original published in 1898). The 15 patterns range from practical to ornate and include the fetching Gentleman’s Half-Hose Knitted in Cable Stripe; the fanciful Baby’s Boot; the enchanting Lady’s Hood; and the attractive Fancy Top for Cycling Hose, in Rob Roy Tartan.

Instructions might perplex a contemporary knitter accustomed to detailed charts and succinct directions, but the patterns are often ingenious, and many of the objects transcend the century-plus span of years since they were devised.
