Vintage Bicycle Stocking Pattern

We asked knitwear designer and author Vicki Square to use the pattern for “Gentlemen’s Bicycle Stocking. Cable and Rib” from Weldon’s Practical Stocking Knitter, Third Series, included in Volume 2 of Weldon’s Practical Needlework (published in 1887), to reknit the socks. While the original pattern was intended for a man, Vicki’s version is sized for a woman’s medium.

Knit these Victorian-era socks in a cable and rib pattern updated for the 21st-century. This pattern includes the original pattern from Weldon’s without any alterations as well as Vicki Square’s notes on how to knit her 21st-century adaptation of the pattern.

Materials:

• Yarn: Mousam Falls Sock Yarn by JaggerSpun, 100% wool yarn, 100 grams (3.5 oz)/skein, 2 skeins
• Needles: set of five double pointed U.S. size 1 (2. 5 mm)

Gauge: 9 sts and 11 rows = 1 inch (2.25 cm)

Finished size: Leg length from ankle to top cuff, 14 inches (25.6 cm); foot length, 9¾ inches (24.0 cm); heel height, 2½ inches (6.4 cm)
