Hairpin-Lace Open Cardigan

Beth Nielsen’s glorious hairpin cardigan will become your go-to garment. Made of luscious merino/silk yarn, it will take you through multiple seasons. The simple silhouette of the style allows the delicate nature of the lace to shine, and though the joining technique is simple, it looks extravagant.

Materials Needed

• Manos del Uruguay Fino, 70% extrafine merino/30% silk yarn, fingering weight, 450 yards (411.5 m)/100 gram (3.5 oz) skein, 1 (1, 2) skeins of #402 Inkwell (A) and 2 skeins of #415 Silver Tea Set (B);

• Crochet hook, size D/3 (3.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

• Clover Hair Pin Lace Tool;

• Tapestry needle

Finished sizes: Bust circumference 34 (38, 42) inches (86.4 [96.5, 106.7] cm), including 1½-inch (3.8-cm) wide front bands, 2-inch (5.1-cm) wide open front; 25 inches (63.5 cm) long; sample shown is 34 inches (86.4 cm)

Gauge: Hairpin lace strip of 36 lps each side = 4½ inches (11.4 cm) long; after working edging that creates a subtle chevron, strip becomes 4 inches (10.2 cm) long; prongs of hairpin tool are set to 2¼ inches (5.7 cm) apart
