Samurai Cowl Knitting Pattern

Japan did not participate in the Great Exhibition, despite the Royal Commission's invitation and Europe's fascination with the Orient. Visitors to the Exhibition would have loved the Samurai Cowl, in which bands of garter stitch alternate with lozenge motifs resembling the scales (kozane) of early samurai armor. Wear this versatile accessory as a cowl, a poncho, or even a hood.

Specific Yarn Used: Plymouth Yarn Linaza (50% alpaca, 25% linen, 25% Tencel; 440 yd [402 m]/3 oz [100 g]): #1662 sapphire, 2 skeins.?

Needles: Size 4 (3.5 mm): 32" circular (cir). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: Markers (m); tapestry needle.

Gauge: 24 sts and 30 rows = 4" in lace patt, blocked; 22 sts and 44 rows = 4" in garter st.

Notes: This cowl is worked from the top down. It is first worked back and forth in rows, then it is joined and worked in the round to the end.
