Open door, Open Heart
My daughter Serra attends college at a Northeastern Pennsylvania all-women’s school that is steeped in traditions. One of the most memorable so far is the “Open Door” ceremony, which is part of the orientation weekend to welcome freshmen. Students receive bouquets of daisies (the school flower) and emerge from the main campus building’s front door to introduce themselves and declare their major. Some students are confident, others shy and uncertain, yet all are unified by the experience. When my daughter graduates in two years, there will be another ceremony mirroring this experience. I can’t wait to see her growth from her first year.

Embroider the daisy sachet with silk thread on a lovely blend of cotton and linen fabric.
Daisy Sachet
Materials
- SChandworks Cotton-Linen blend fabric (55% cotton, 45% linen): Baby blue, 1 piece at least 6" × 6" (15.2 × 15.2 cm); Pistachio, 1 piece 3 1/2" × 3 1/2" (8.9 × 8.9 cm)
- Treenway Silks Harmony 6-strand floss (100% spun silk; 10 yd/skein): #0 Natural White, #313 Midori, and #202 Electric Dijon, 1 skein each
- Sewing thread
- Polyfil for stuffing
- Optional, lavender buds (Serra’s favorite scent)
- Embroidery Hoop: 4" (10.2 cm) diameter
- Needle
- Scissors
- Colored pencil or method to mark pattern on fabric
Instructions
Finished size: 2¾" × 2¾" (6.9 × 6.9 cm)
Cut a 6" × 6" (15.2 × 15.2 cm) square of Baby blue fabric. Center fabric over design. Trace the flower pattern lightly onto fabric.
Place fabric in the hoop, with the design centered.

Instructions

Cut a 6" × 6" (15.2 × 15.2 cm) square of Baby blue fabric. Center fabric over design. Trace the flower pattern lightly onto fabric.
Place fabric in the hoop, with the design centered.

Stitching
Using 2 strands of #0 Natural White, outline the petals with stem stitch.
Using 1 strand of #0 Natural White, add details to the inside of the petals using straight stitch.
Using 1 strand of #313 Midori, stitch lines of straight stitch radiating outward along the flower center.
Using 2 strands of #202 Electric Dijon, make a ring of French knots around the outside of the flower’s center. Fill the flower center with French knots.
Finishing
Remove embroidery from hoop and lightly press from back side. Center design and trim to 3½" × 3½" (8.9 × 8.9 cm) square.
Cut 3½" × 3½" (8.9 × 8.9 cm) square of Pistachio.
Mark a ¼" seam allowance on the wrong side of Pistachio fabric.
Pin fabrics with right sides together. Use a running stitch to sew pieces together, leaving a small opening along one side.
Turn sachet right side out. Stuff to desired fullness with polyfil and lavender buds if desired. Fold in raw edges of opening and whipstitch closed.
