One of my fondest childhood memories is snuggling in a crocheted wool afghan that my grandfather’s mother had crocheted. It was cozy personified. I could (and did) spend hours wrapped in that afghan, reading voraciously. How sweet!

Earlier this year, we acquired a copy of the 16th edition of Fleischer’s Knitting & Crochet Manual, published in 1918 by S. B. & B. W. Fleisher in Philadelphia. All of the patterns in the book call for Fleisher’s yarns, which were produced in the company’s mill in Philadelphia. Vintage publications always evoke memories, and this one is no exception—fabulous afghans to crochet!

We selected eight of the patterns (we made no alterations to the originals) from the book for this new PieceWork eBook. Several are adorable afghans for baby, including Dottie Dimple and Robin Redbreast. But my personal favorite is the Somerset. The interesting photograph of a model wrapped up in a Somerset afghan that opens the Afghan section of the book is one reason. Another is that this afghan is embellished with embroidery and includes a chart for the embroidery—nice.

These are close-up photographs (they do show the evolution in patterns from no illustrations to fuzzy hand-drawn ones to these). Need to work the Bean stitch, we’ve got you covered (and you’ll need it if you make Dottie Dimple). How about the Crazy stitch used in the Somerset? Or Nixie?

All in all, this eBook is a delightful look at what was being crocheted in 1918. I so hope you enjoy it. Get those hooks flying! Someone needs a “Warm & Cozy Afghan.”
